This game is awesome. I've only had it a few weeks and I'm already overly addicted to it. I only have the original, I have not gotten the burning crusade yet.
Servers
There are a few types of servers you can play on.
-Normal servers: non pvp servers, considered PVE (player vs environment)
-PVP: Player vs Plaey. Outside of towns and main roads other players can atack you.
-RP: Role playing server.
-RPPVP: A player vs player server of role playing
After you sign up for the game, you need to choose a server and make a character. There are 8 races you can be without the expansion. The alliance races are: Human, Dwarf, Gnome, and Night elf. The Horde races are Orc, Tauren, Troll, and the Undead. Each race has it's own classes it can be, and racial abilities. I'm only going to name a few of the classes, and describe them.
Warrior- Strong melee combatters, with no mana. They have rage which fills up when you do or take damage, and it allows you to use special attacks.
Druid- Shapeshifting characters who get different forms like a bear form and a cat form. They can also heal. For the most part they are for people who can't make up their mind what to be, since they are good at everything, yet the best at nothing,
Priest- The main priests are healers or shadow priests. This is the hardest class to train, but a shadow priest is one of the most sought after classes in guilds. Also, at high levels they can beat just about any class. Shadow Priests specialize in highly damageing shadow magic, and healing priests focus on spells to aid themselve and their party.
Hunter- Well rounded character, at level 10 you learn the ability to tame monsters as pets and use them in battle. Easy for beginners, since your pet can serve as a tank while you stand back and shoot at the enemy.
Paladin- Decent melee class with healing abilities. The famous Leroy Jenkins was a paladin.
Mage- Powerful magic class. I hate them. They turn me into sheeps when I fight them. Andto quote a song's lyrics about mages 'you will get nerfed in every single patch"
Shaman- A horde class only. Strong magic class with reincarnation.
These are just the classes I have either experiemtned or thought of trying out. The rest I don't know too much about.
Professions
-In the game your character can get 2 professions. Like mining, smithing, engineering, tailoring, enchanting, skinning, leatherworking, and herbalism. It is important to pick a skill that can actually benefit your character, such as a hunter picking skinning/leatherworking since until level 40 he can only wear leather armour.
There are also some secondary professions, which don't count towards your main 2. A few of these are First Aid, Fishing, and Cooking. They get expeerience the same way a normal profession would, by creating items or obtaining items.
Talents- After level 10 you get a talent point every time you level. Each class has 3 talent trees, and it is often wise to specialize in just one of those trees, since you do not have an unlimited number of points you can gain. The talent trees help your character learn special skills and passive abilities.
Armour and equipment
-Each class can only use certain types of armour and equipment, other than the warrior who can learn to use just about anything. There are many types of weapons, like one hand axes, 2h axes, staffsm wands, maces, 2h macesm swords, daggers, 2h swords, and more. Armour is cloth, leather, mail, and plate.
Also, there are different rarities of items. Grey names mean they are of poor quality and have no special properties like stat bonuses. White names are common quality, and only high level equipment of this type has special qualities. Green is uncommon, and often more powerful that white equipment. Blue items are rare quality, and almost always have special qualities. Purple items are epic, with great power.
Quests- throughtout the game there are many quests you can do for money and exp (fastest way to level, grinding is slow) At first you get easy quests, like kill a certain amount of these low level nmonsters or take this item to this NPC over there. Later on they become harder, having to obtain rare items in order to finisht he quest and find things from certain enemies.
That's a basic overview of things, and all in all it is one of the best games I have ever played. There is something for everybody who plays games. I highly recommend that anyone who likes RPGs at all finds a way to get this game.
