I'm sure all of you will hate me for my spiffy new avatar. You need a speed of at least 224.4468 kbps to fetch the image within a minute. It basically breaks down like this: Connection | Time | 14.4 modem - 14.4 kbps | 15:35 | 28.8 modem - 28.8 kbps | 7:48 | V.92 modem - 56 kbps | 4:00 | 100 kbps | 2:15 | ISDN - 128 kbps | 1:45 | Satellite - 400 kbps | 0:33 | 1 Mbps | 0:13 | DSL/T1 - 1500 kbps | 0:09 |
And onward from there... My download speed on DSL is about 1.23 Mbps, by the way. ;D Anyway, enjoy my obscenely large avatar... Edit: Here's the avatar in question since I will inevitably change it sometime...

Oh the agony! It took me 30 minutes to load your avatar using my Smart Dial service provided by Global Net. I have had that service since 1995 and was happy with their service untill their MERGER. Since the merger I am lucky if i can connect at 7 kbps! Maybe some day i can switch over to this lovely service called "Juno". I would love to someday move to AOL Dial Up as i hear is blazing fast. Of course i cant get that service untill i can scrape up mucho cash for their good service. I of course will need to buy one of those fancy devices they advertise as a 56k modem i think. I cant wait untill that day.

Hah, I changed it already. This one should take less than half the time to load. It's still large in GIF standards, but it's also high quality. I'm very pleased with it, and I'll probably use it for a while. Geez I'm bored...

Tuxedo Kamen-sama Some versions call him Tuxedo Mask... I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it, so I won't discuss his identity. That mystery is a large part of the first season. There's only one episode I've seen thus far in any season that shows his transformation in full, and I havent' seen it in so long I forget exactly which one. Since there are 46 episodes in that season I'm not inclined to go searching for it, but if I happen upon it I'll probably make an avatar of it. He is actually one of my favorite characters. And on an unrelated topic, my mother's dog likes to climb up on my bed and snore...

Got a new one for you. This one's less than 200 kB, and pretty good quality. I really couldnt' improve on the quality enough to justify a larger size. This is Haruhi Suzumiya from the series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. My name includes a reference to this as well, now, but it's not viewable without manually setting your encoding to japanese. I'll try to make proboards smarter when I get done with this mess. These are the programs I used to make these. I used Fraps to capture the Melancholy video from the DivX encoded AVI. (ULead GIF Animator may support this, but it didn't seem to in a normal manner, so I used Fraps video capture instead.) I used an old discontinued version of ULead GIF Animator which can import normal AVIs as GIF frames. After deciding which frames to keep and which to destory, I exported all frames to a directory and used Multiple Image Resizer .NET to do a batch resize to width 100. I saved them as JPEG 100% quality. There's an issue with ULead GIF Animator importing unpaletted BMPs, and MIR .NET butchers GIFs, so JPEG seemed like the best choice. Anyway, after resizing I imported the entire folder back into ULead GIF Animator and set the speed (10 FPS for all three), the played with the quality contorls a little until I found the best choice. I also save the original before messing with the quality just in case. In the case of the Sailor Moon DVDs, I used an MPEG-2 to AVI converter that I no longer have. There are many such freeware programs though. Fraps was not involved in the making of the Sailor Moon avatars. Considering fraps potentially rips at a different rate than the original, and it's possible (though I can't prove it) that the resized image is a lower quality than the original I consider I consider the Sailor Moon avatars to be perfect-1 quality and the Haruhi avatar to be perfect-2.

While I can't officially offer a prize, I'd like to see who can make the best avatar while I'm away. The avatar should be made by you, though translated things (like my avatars taken from DVDs) will be accepted. Post your submissions on this thread. Size will be considered, though I'm somewhat loose on that because of my first avatar. Mostly it will be judged on overall coolness and skill. If it's not posted on this thread I won't consider it. You may use either the url or img codes for posting.

Is it me or does that avatar seem a tad slow paced? You might want to decrease the delay. Anyway, I'm posting (OMG ) and no, I'm not actually back. I do have limited power and a good internet connection so I should be around form time to time. Edit: Never did paste my latest one here for future viewing. It's a tad less than 600K.
